Most people who are 35 and over are in a similar predicament, so you are not alone.

  2. Bleeding gums
  3. Gum recession
  4. Gums that bleed
  5. Loose teeth
  6. Gums that are red, swollen, and tender

See your dentist if you have any of these signs! What can you do to address these signs of gum disease? Before answering this question you need to answer a more fundamental question:

What is the Cause of Periodontal Gum Disease?

The simple answer is found in a dirty word and it is not 4 letters. What is that word? Bacteria! Yes, bacteria is the bad guy and if not controlled it will wreak havoc on your teeth and gums. When a patient is diagnosed with periodontal (gum) disease, periodontists may choose either a surgical or non surgical treatment option. The main cause of periodontal disease is bacteria in the form of a sticky, colorless plaque that forms constantly on your teeth and necessitates regular dental visits and professional cleanings.

AAP treatment guidelines state that the least invasive and most cost effective options should be used to achieve and maintain periodontal health. One non surgical treatment option that is both cost effective and less invasive is called scaling and root planning which is a careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus (tartar) from deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins. The scaling and root planning is followed by an adjunctive therapy such as local delivery antimicrobials and host modulations, as determined on an individual case-by-case basis.

After receiving a scaling and root planning procedure, most periodontists agree that many patients do not require further active treatment, including more invasive surgery. Most patients will, however, require additional ongoing maintenance therapy to sustain health. However, non-surgical treatment options do have limitations and when non-surgical procedures do not achieve periodontal health, surgery may be needed to restore periodontal anatomy damaged by periodontal diseases.

When diagnosed with periodontal disease, a more complex treatment plan may be necessary and your periodontist may recommend periodontal surgery. Periodontal surgery is necessary when your periodontist determines that the tissue around your teeth is unhealthy and cannot be repaired with a non-surgical treatment option. The four types of the most prescribed surgical treatments are as follows:

  • Pocket Reduction Procedures
  • Regenerative Procedures
  • Crown Lengthening
  • Soft Tissue Grafts

Preliminary research suggests that lasers, when used in conjunction with scaling and root planning, may improve the effectiveness of this procedure. Patients may experience less bleeding, swelling and discomfort when lasers are used properly during periodontal therapy. Proper and professional use of lasers is important as each laser has different wavelengths and power levels that can be safely used during different periodontal procedures. If incorrect wavelengths and/or power levels are used during a periodontal procedure, damage to periodontal tissues can occur.

Many periodontists also perform cosmetic procedures to enhance a patient’s smile in addition to performing surgeries to maintain periodontal health and to treat periodontal disease. Frequently, patients who opt for cosmetic procedures, notice improved function as well. Cosmetic procedures include Crown Lengthening, Soft Tissue Grafts and Ridge Augmentation.

Gum diseases are always the most troublesome part of our oral hygiene. They are fairly asymptomatic but they silently continue to deteriorate the healthy tissues over a period of several years. The worse part about the disease is that the patient cannot identify its proper origin. This makes things more difficult to comprehend. The combination of all these issues encourages people to ignore the issue till they start developing visible signs of gingivitis or gum inflammation.

However, the new discovery of laser surgery for advanced gum diseases has increased the number of patients seeking early treatment for the issue. The technique is popularly termed as LANAP that stands for “Laser-assisted new attachment procedure”. And the technique has been proven far more effective and faster than conventional periodontal surgeries.

Formerly, gum surgeries were quite invasive which involved removal of affected tissues followed by ligation and stitches. The procedure worked but it entailed lot of postoperative complications like bleeding, infection, delayed recovery, pain, further inflammation etc. To this end, LANAP can be seen as a welcoming change that promises quick recovery and limited or zero postoperative issues.

The treatment is fully approved by Food and Drug Administration. The procedure is painless and simple which involves no bleeding. A thin laser beam is used to destroy the infected cells from the gum tissues surrounding the teeth. Alongside this procedure they use a special coagulation system that minutely curbs the source of bleeding. Thus the procedure is quite simple and not at all harmful for the surrounding healthy tissues.

LANAP treatments are available for all kinds of gum diseases. However, it is advisable if the patient takes the treatment during the preliminary stages of his periodontal pathology. This would require less debridement and faster recovery. Gum diseases left untreated can cause several complications. They can affect the general health of an individual leading to worsening of various diseases and also development of new ones.

Symptoms like puffy gums, bleeding and loosened gums are the initial signs of a growing gum disease or gingivitis. This is also an indication that the patient is sheltering loads of bacteria and germs within his oral cavity. These germs and microorganisms gain access to the body and start polluting various systemic structures within the patient’s body.

Researches have proved that prolonged gum diseases can make a patient more vulnerable to diseases like diabetes, heart diseases, cardiovascular disorders, strokes etc. During the initial stages, gingivitis can cause severe bad breath, weakness, fatigue etc. The best way to avoid all these troubles is to get regular dental checkups and to take timely treatments. Besides, now LANAP has simplified the entire surgical protocol which is yet another reason to get prompt treatment as soon as possible.

LANAP is not way too expensive and anyone can get it. At present around 700 dentists are trained and approved to perform LANAP procedures.
